So my girlfriend, Sonia, got into the University of Southern California’s MFA for Writing for Screen and Television program in the School for the Cinematic Arts, or USCMFAWS&TSCA, for short. Point is, I’m moving to L.A. late this summer.

I thought I’d make a trip to Wikipedia and find the 18 best songs about California. Hey, screw that. 18 songs titled “California”. Or “Los Angeles” or variants.

  1. “California” by Copeland
  2. “California” by Bob Dylan
  3. “California” by Phantom Planet (because my only Californian roommate loved to sing it)
  4. “California” by Semisonic (to get a Minnesotan perspective)
  5. “California” by Stroke 9 (I’m just going to sing “Little Black Backpack”)
  6. “California” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
  7. “California” by The Rentals
  8. “California” by Rufus Wainwright
  9. “California” by Metro Station (here’s hoping it’s as good as “Shake It”)
  10. “California” by The Kooks
  11. “California” by Low
  12. “California” by Gomez
  13. “California” by Dr. Dog
  14. “L.A.” by Elliott Smith
  15. “Los Angeles” by Ozma
  16. “Los Angeles I’m Yours” by The Decemberists
  17. “L.A. is My Lady” by Frank Sinatra
  18. “California Love” by 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre

If everyone sings/raps about it, it must be a good place to live, right?
